Raumgeometrie

ENGLISH VERSION

Berlin’s Icelandic Überface: „Raumgeometrie – Húbert Nói Jóhannesson first Solo Show in Berlin charts unseen territories. Siller Contemporary presents a nordic overture for 2017’s Gallery Weekend.

„In 1986 Reykjavík set the stage for one of the first encounters between East and West unfolding truly seismic repercussions, “ recalls Icelandic artist Húbert Noí Jóhannessson looking back on the days when Ronald Reagan and Michael Gorbachev met on the island. They entered into negotiations which would eventually end the division between East and West, a division at the very heart of Berlin – a city island like Iceland set amid two opposing tectonic plates, a place where historical forces are constantly at play.

After one year of artist-residency in Berlin and Germany, the former epicenter of the continent’s East-West divide hosts Jóhannessson’s first solo show in Berlin supported by the embassy of Iceland and presenttelefon ed by Siller Contemporary.

His work inspects divides and divisions between East and West. Division marked the very nature of Berlin for over forty years – and it is division that constitutes the geological foundations of Iceland, an island constantly redefined by a clash of two tectonic forces. Inspired by these parallels Jóhannessson explores the city following the footsteps of David Bowie among others. In the process he creates fascinating new work exchanging his hallmark landscapes for captivating reflections of the urban.

His pantings center on locations places of focus and memory capturing elements of motion and stillness. Jóhannesson immerses himself in landscapes contemplating every detail, transforming outer environments into inner spaces. He paints purely from memory without auxiliary tools creating überimages bordering on two poles: observation and imagination.

All images created during his artist-residency stay will be displayed in RaumgeometrIE as part of the exclusive opening on April 26 at 7:00 pm in the Linienstrasse gallery. Edda Jökulsdóttir representative of the Icelandic ambassador will give us the honour to open the exhibition and welcome both artist and guests in person.

Húbert Nói Jóhannesson (born 1961 in Reykjavík) studied arts at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts from 1983-1987 after receiving a scientific education (Geology, Chemistry, Biology) at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík.
